The picturesque town of Polis Chrysochou derives its name from the Greek word for city. When it is translated it means "the City of the Golden Land" due to the fertile land surrounding the river Chrysochou. No large hotels an be found in Polis, therefore travellers can step into a world away from the usual tourist attractions and enjoy the peace and serenity of this small but beautiful town.
The village square is the main feature of Polis, with its cobbled streets, souvenir shops, banks, jewellers, chemists and bars where visitors can sample locally made wines, such as Commandaria a sweet dessert wine favoured by "Richard the Lion Heart" and used as a holy communion wine. Conventional restaurants surrounding the square offer tantalizing home baked cuisine. Ice cream parlours, tiny coffee shops are a few of the delights on offer in Polis.
There are a number of possibilities for walking enthusiasts within the area, including the trail of Aphrodite and Adonis (walk in the footsteps of the gods). Explore the baths of Aphrodite where Legend states Aphrodite bathed with her lover Adonis. It is believed should one bathe in the waters at the baths of Aphrodite they will be blessed with the secret to eternal youth and beauty. Enjoy unspoiled scenery of the peninsula and the Agamas National Park.
The scenery during spring time is at its best with an abundance of wild flowers orange and lemon blossom, wild lavender, basil and poppy fields.
Places of Interest
Polis is full of Byzantine churches and traditional houses, and also houses several archeological museums.
One of these museums is the Museum of Marion-Arsinoe. The museum has three exhibition rooms going through the history of the area.
The Polis Culture Centre is another interesting museum. It is a modern building with a theatre stage, holding a maximum capacity of 400 people, and also has an exhibition hall.
The Church of Agios Andronikos is a Bazantine Church, famous for its 16th Century wall paintings. Under the Ottoman rule it was used as a mosque from 1571 until 1974 when it was returned to Chirstianity. Agia Kyriaki is another interesting church to visit, dationg back to the 18th Century.
Close to Polis you will also find the famous Bathes of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, who is believed to have bathed in this small grotto with her lover Adonis.
