| Overview The Akamas Peninsula in the west of Cyprus is named after the son of Theseus and is an area of mesmerizing natural beauty. It is highly advisable to purchase all necessary items as after this strip of amenities, one will enter Akamas and no such amenities can be found.
Activities The most popular activities found at Akamas include, cycling, safaris, walking and hiking. There are a few dirt tracks penetrate the peninsula which is only accessible by four wheel drive vehicles. For the benefit of all visitors nature trails have been established for walkers. The perfect way to see this popular coastal strip is by boat from Paphos.
Natural environment The Akamas national park is a splendid 155sq km area of hills and rocky shores. Here on will find an impressive diversity of flora and fauna unique to the Mediterranean. Akamas is home to 530 plant species which is a third of the total for Cyprus. The beaches at Lara are one of the best, these being two sandy sections on either side of a bushy headland. The northern one is the most extensive. Here the coast faces west and the waves tend to be bigger.
Historical sites Lara Bay is an important turtle breeding site and is home to two endangered turtle species, namely, green turtle and hawks-bill turtle. Loggerhead turtles also lay their eggs in the golden sands.
