| Smile if glass breaks
In most cultures when a child accidentally breaks an ornament or any glass their hearts start beating faster as they know what will come next. The mother walks in, with her forehead lines all gathered, and starts telling the child to be more careful and how that ornament had great sentimental value.
This is not the same in the Cypriot culture. When any glass breaks accidentally it is seen as a form of good luck. The Cypriots believe that any evil that was dwelling in the area is now broken as the glass is. They also believe that if a glass shatters into little pieces, this is even better as some thing terrible would have happened, but now that the glass shattered, the evil or bad luck has gone.
This philosophy is applicable to adults as well. When any thing breaks accidentally, most people smile instead of getting upset. In Greek people say, "Ine ya to kalo", which means it is for the best.
It is obvious that children all around the world would love it if their parents believed in this tradition. This does not mean that we should all go around breaking things deliberately, it has to be accidental.
