Easter Eggs
Easter Eggs

Surely every one has heard of Easter eggs. They usually come in the form of chocolates, shaped in either bunnies or eggs. The Cypriots have a similar tradition but use real eggs. That's right not only are the chocolate shaped eggs enjoyed, but real eggs as well.

The Easter egg is associated with beliefs of ancient origin. According to the Greek Orthodox belief, the egg is a symbol of Resurrection, representing the emergence of Christ from His tomb to everlasting life.

The albumen or egg white symbolizes the tomb in which Christ lay. The yolk with its bright yellow colour is seen as Christ rising. Another symbol of the eggs is that the egg white is seen as earth and the yolk as heaven.

The process of preparing the eggs is simple. The eggs are boiled to ensure the content is solid, then they are painted all sorts of colours and patterns such as leaves are placed on the egg.

The most common colour to paint the eggs is red. Even the colour bears symbolic meaning. The colour symbolizes the blood of Christ. After these eggs are prepared, the ‘fun; begins. Each family member or friend takes an egg and gently taps a partner's egg. Evidently one of the eggs would break.

The person who has the so called undefeated egg is classified as the lucky one.
