The focal point of Paphos Harbour and Paphos Town in general, is the old Harbour Fort. This proud structure was originally built as a Byzantine fort in order to protect the defenceless harbour. In the 13th century it was rebuilt by the Lusignans, before being dismantled in the 16th century by the Venetians as they were unable to defend it against the Ottomas. The Ottomans then both restored and strengthened the structure once they had taken capture of the island.
Paphos Fort has taken many forms in its long and captivating past. Once a Roman castle, a feudal castle, a Turkish tower and a British salt warehouse, Paphos Fort now remains empty and unused, except as a tourist attraction, where for a small fee you can enter and let your imagination run wild as you think of all the history these walls contain.
